Trackmania’s future after ESWC? PDF Print
Written by JWH
Tuesday, 28 April 2009
kat_eswc_01.pngOn the 5th of April, team-aaa revealed bankruptcy documents from the ESWC. This news came just a few days after the ESWC CEO, Matthieu Dallon, confirmed the financial problems Games-Services were dealing with. Trackmania Nations started off with the ESWC brand name, next to that it has been an official game for the ESWC competitions since 2006. Most players are looking up to the ESWC a whole year and are preparing for it. In France there are LAN’s throughout the year to determine who will have a shot to qualify for the ESWC.

Will all of these be gone? What will the future bring for Trackmania Nations?

World Cyber Games
Not long after the news about the ESWC, the WCG came with great news. They announced Trackmania Nations forever to be an official game for the next World Cyber Games in China. This may have saved motivation for a lot of players that ever wanted to play at the ESWC. Since the concept to qualify is quite the same. Play in a national qualifier to get to the international stage. This also means that in France, the ESWC LAN’s can be replaced with WCG LAN’s possibly. Only possible downside is that there might be only 1 slot per country. This could rule out some title favorites in countries such as France and Sweden. However this isn't confirmed yet.

Upcoming LAN’s
The number of LAN’s to have Trackmania Nations as an official competition is increasing. There always used to be decent LAN’s in France and the XLParty LAN’s in Portugal that made it an official game.
Dreamhack Winter 2008 was one of the first to recognize Trackmania Nations as an official competition and had a decent price purse of approx. 2,000€. This was such a success that the organization has decided to up the price purse to approx. 5,000€ for Dreamhack Summer 2009. However the major downside is that this competition will still be played as BYOC. Which means players would have to take their own computer/laptop in order to compete.
Next to this is The-eXperience ’09 in Denmark, which is hosted by Roskilde eSport (aka Roskilde Ravens). They have a price purse of 3,000€ and as a major upside, it’s not a BYOC LAN.

Still hope for the ESWC?

Nescho Topalov, who is responsible for the ESWC in Germany, speculated that there is some serious interest to buy the ESWC brand. There might even be a possibility for the ESWC to take place early 2010. However the question is how many gamers are willing to return and compete to a possibly unstable competition, after last years price money not being paid out.
Meanwhile ESWC Masters in Korea is still on schedule and will happen with different sponsors than the ESWC originally had. Personally I think that, if this event becomes a success, some Asian company might buy the brand. However the question is if the new owners would keep a game like Trackmania Nations.

Verdict
Despite ESWC being cancelled, we are seeing a growth in the LAN scene for Trackmania. More and more LAN's are recognizing the game and make it official and this may even grow more! WCG will mean a big thing to the scene as more people seem to value the WCG compared to the ESWC. So we'll see how this will grow! One thing is for sure, Trackmania ain't suffering from the ESWC being cancelled.

agreed. things are looking brighter than what it seems. the whole e-sport scene
isn't doing so well right now, but our scene keeps developing at a nice pace
imo.
